Advanced driver assistance systems

(ADAS), are electronic systems that helps the vehicle driver while driving or during parking. When designed with a safe human-machine interface, they are intended to increase car safety and more generally road safety.
Most road accidents occur due to human error.  Advanced driver-assistance systems are systems developed to automate, adapt and enhance vehicle systems for safety and better driving. The automated system which is provided by ADAS to the vehicle is proven to reduce road fatalities, by minimizing the human error. Safety features are designed to avoid collisions and accidents by offering technologies that alert the driver to potential problems, or to avoid collisions by implementing safeguards and taking over control of the vehicle. Adaptive features may automate lighting, provide adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance, pedestrian crash avoidance mitigation (PCAM), incorporate satnav/traffic warnings, alert driver to other cars or dangers, lane departure warning system, automatic lane centering, show what is in blind spots, or connect to smartphones for navigation instructions.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Recalibration

Many automakers have been slowly adding advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS, to vehicles in the last decade without a lot of fanfare, but the features, many of them standard in newer makes and models, make an enormous difference to your safety and the safety of passengers, pedestrians and other drivers.
The locations of ADAS technologies on/in a vehicle are sometimes hard to identify. Your vehicle;s front windshield is an integral part of many ADAS technologies. After a windshield is replaced its vital that your cars front camera is re-calibrated. Unfortunately, not all auto mechanics or glass repair shops are equipped to re-calibrate your vehicles driver assist system. At Shiny Auto Glass we proud ourselves on having the knowledge and technology necessary to re-calibrate your vehicles driver assistance systems after installing a new windshield.

What Are Advanced Driver Assistance Systems?

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are built-in technologies designed to car, adapt or enhance already present safety systems. From cruise control to automated breaking, smartphone connectivity and motion-activated sensors, there are ADAS systems already prevalent in the marketplace and many more in the developmental stages.

What ADAS Features Exist in new model Cars?

ADAS runs the extent from what we would now consider to be new features, like a dashboard backup camera, to the truly cutting-edge, like parking assist.
The ADAS technologies list can be found in todays modern car models:

  • Adaptive cruise control (ACC)
  • Glare-free high beam and pixel light
  • Navigation systems
  • Blind-spot monitor
  • Collision-avoidance system
  • Drowsy driver detection
  • Hill descent control
  • Intelligent speed adaptation, or intelligent speed advice (ISA)
  • Lane departure warning system
  • Lane keep assistance
  • Parking sensor
  • Pedestrian detection system
  • Tire pressure monitoring
  • Wrong-way driving warning

At Shiny Auto Glass, we expect this list to grow and develop more in the near future.

Why Does ADAS System Need to Be Re-calibrated After a Windshield Replacement?

If your vehicle has suffered damage and requires a new windshield, its vital that the front-facing camera that controls many of the cars ADAS systems is re-calibrated. When your windshield is replaced, every millimeter counts. If the new windshield is even a couple of millimeters off-center, it will affect the view of your vehicles forward-facing camera. Millimeters off-center can equal feet in the view of your camera; meaning functions like lane keep assistance and lane departure warning will malfunction, either over correcting or under correcting, causing dangerous driving conditions and increasing the potential for accidents.
It's vital that every time your windshield is replaced or adjusted, that your vehicles front-facing camera is re-calibrated.

Shiny Auto Glass Driver Assist Recalibration

With new technology comes new responsibilities. The ADAS technologies in your car are only as good as the way theyre calibrated. Home to sensors and small cameras, a cars windshield is a vital component of its ADAS system. The replacement of a front windshield can have a major impact on the function of a cars safety system. Even the smallest change in the position of the windshield can result in a dangerous change in the systems function.
In Shiny Auto Glass, we've taken a proactive approach to vehicle technology advances and are proud to serve the needs of modern car owners.

How Do Shiny Auto Glass Recalibrate ADAS Systems?

Shiny Auto Glass offering driver assists re-calibration services using Autel ADAS calibration frame. Shiny Auto Glass is certified to use using Autel ADAS calibration frame tool to re-calibrate windshields and keep drivers safe. Re-calibration requires that our technicians work to mimic the conditions under which the car left the factory floor, including cargo weight, fuel amount and tire pressure. The process for re-calibration follows four major steps:

  • Pre-scan: Is the camera functioning normally? If not, the vehicle will need to be sent to a dealer for camera repair.
  • Replacement: If Shiny Auto Glass replace the windshield, we replace it with a windshield that matches the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) windshield.
  • Recalibration: Recalibration is divided into two processes, dynamic and static. Dynamic recalibration requires driving the vehicle, while static recalibration requires the vehicle be calibrated with a fixed target image in front of it at a specific distance.
  • Post-scan: The final step to ensure the camera is functioning properly, post calibration.
